Choosing the Right Lawyer

When you begin to choose a lawyer to advise and assist you, where do you start? Most people do not even know where to begin. That is why you should look for a lawyer who has experience handling the type of case that you believe you have.

First, is that lawyer certified by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization in the area of law that applies to your case? If so, he or she has qualified by experience and by testing to be qualified to handle such cases. If not, that lawyer may or may not be capable of handling the issues involved in your case.

Second, has the lawyer you consult been successful in handling the types of cases for which you wish to engage him or her? Although no lawyer can give you specific results for specific cases, and no lawyer can ethically state that he or she can obtain specific results in your case, you should be able to determine in general the types of results your lawyer has obtained in the past.

Third, and perhaps equally as important as the first two, do you feel comfortable with the lawyer and with the other members of his or her staff. Most lawyers in this day and time have qualified and professional legal support personnel. When you meet with a lawyer or speak with the lawyer or his staff, do you feel comfortable and do you feel that you are treated with respect?

Remember, you are the client. The lawyer should be courteous to you, and should tell you the truth and advise you competently. You should not be told just what you want to hear.
